During our basketball lesson with Julia, it was crucial to be able to take in all of the information that she was giving us. I’ve never played basketball competitively, so I am unfamiliar with some of the rules, but I was prepared to run the drills that Julia had prepared and to give my all. Like most kids, I have played a little bit, either in pickup games or in my front yard, so I knew the basis of how to play and where I needed to be. From this lesson, I wanted to learn most from this is just the style of play that I found to be a good mix between competitive and fun. With something that wasn’t meant to be super “competitive”, but more to run us through some drills, I had to be prepared to run up and down the court while having a good time with the class. It was fun to play knockout, 2v2, and all of the other drills that we ran. Through a lot of the drills, we were all able to bond in a non-classroom environment. This was the first of many individual teaching events, and it set the curve on how we should demonstrate our strengths. Whether it was a scrimmage or a water break, we were all connecting on a different level than we would in the Bailey Space and we started developing a better understanding of each other as individuals with different abilities and strengths. I believe that this lesson not only strengthened our class, but strengthened us all as individuals.
